Well, we have finally arrived at Black and White.  As you will see from the copious amounts of pictures in this category – it is one of my favorites.  For those who know me, my closet is filled with Black for the simple reason that you can pair it with almost any other colour…especially white!

BCBG Max Azria – Striped Contrast Dress – I’ve been seeing a lot of this corsetted top over t shirt styling.  I quite like it as you can wear this out on a Friday night or on a Saturday afternoon.

Dior – Gathered Neck Dress

Emilio Pucci – I love, love, love this dress!  It was a nice surprise too because I often find that Emilio Pucci’s flamboyant patterns and colours put me off.  Not on this one!

Emporio Armani – Damn, does that man know how to tailor.

Free People – Beyond Vintage Dress.  Horizontal stripes = very flattering.

Givenchy

Hermes – I could definitely do ‘prep’ if I owned this amazing Hermes outfit.

Herve Leger – Off White, Black Contrast, Bandage Dress.  I have been eyeing this dress for months now.  Me likey!  Classic Herve Leger style with a great twist on the corset.  I’ve been swooning over this dress so much that I actually had a dream that I helped Max Azria on the street and he offered me free dresses for life and this one was my first request.  Too much?

Jason Wu – Here is a perfect example of how colour can be paired with black and white!

JC Studio

Marchesa – Does it again!  I’ll have to look, but I think every trend/post I’ve done has featured Marchesa.

Moschino Cheap & Chic

Alice + Olivia – Zip Lapel Leather Blazer and Maggie Sequin Dress.  While on the topic of Black & White, this outfit not only offers the colour contrast, but the textural contrast as well.  I love when all of those elements combine to make something as well put together as this.  Leather, flowing fabrics, black, white…what more can a girl ask for?

Christopher Kane – Boy Doll Tee

Thakoon – Luiza Jumper

Alexander McQueen – Eagle Silk Shift Dress.  Like the Christopher Kane Tee above, this piece uses a graphic print that is lightly displayed on the garment.  It makes it look almost whispy, fantastical and visually transparent.

Available at www.net-a-porter.com

Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti – Silk-Chiffon Empire Line Dress – I remember one of my first moments in fashion being an Alberta Ferreti advertisement where the models were wearing dresses similar to this one.  Not only did it fit the theme, but it tugged on my heart strings.

Cheap Monday – Duct Tape Skirt

Foley & Corinna – Elastic Belt Skirt

TNFC – Lace Frill Shoulder Backless Dress

And now for the accessories…(I told you there were lots in this category!)

Acne – Agate.  I love the raw heel.

Aldo – Turnbough Necklace.

Jessica Kagan Cushman – Aries Zodiac Cuff.  Wearing your initials is ‘so last season’.  Wear your zodiac constellation instead!

Kara Ross – Jet Asian Cuff

KG by Kurt Geiger – Hercules Shoe.  Is that navy or black?  Either way it’s going in!

Tre Anita – Bauble Ring

Available at www.kirnazabete.com

Alexander Wang – Eliza Cut Out Wedge Mule.

Nasty Gal – Crown of Feathers.  Can you say, Where The Wild Things Are?

Swarovski – Fizz Amethyst Ring

Lastly, for the boy….

Volcom – Royce Tuxedo Jacket.  Just for fun 🙂

Was that enough for you?  I could just go on and on!  Remember,  for this trend, it’s all about contrast.

There was a sea of ruffles and colour on this year’s red carpet and I thought I would compile a short list of dresses that I loved.  I was slightly surprised to not see any Alexander McQueen on the runway, but then again, Lady GaGa didn’t attend 😛

So here it is – my short list of stand out gowns:

Amanda Seyfried in Armani Prive

Anna Kendrick in Elie Saab

Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta

Demi Moore in Versace

Elizabeth Banks in Versace

Jennifer Lopez in Armani Prive

Kate Winslet in Salvatore Ferragamo

Miley Cyrus in Jenny Packham

Zoe Kravitz in Alexis Mabille

Honourable Mentions…

Kristen Stewart in Monique Lhuillier – It’s a good thing she chose a black dress because the girl can’t crack a smile to save her life.  I think this picture shows the biggest smile I have ever seen on her face.

Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab – LOVE!  This dress almost made it into the top spot for me.

Sandra Bullock in Marchesa – For those that have been following this blog, you know that I have a soft spot for Marchesa.  Sandra Bullock looks like she could contend for the gig as the Oscar statue itself.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel Couture – I love the unique design to this dress.  If I could pick one con about it, it’s the seam down the front.  I find it takes away slightly from the dress.

Sigourney Weaver in Lanvin – The carpet wasn’t the only thing that was red at this year’s Oscars.  There seemed to be a plethora of red dresses but this one by Lanvin absolutely takes the top spot when it comes to the colour.

And the award goes to…

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries Van Noten – The graphic print is absolutely beautiful and she wears it to perfection.

And how could we do an Oscars Best Dressed List without showcasing some of the worst’s:

Charlize Theron in Christian Dior – Oh Charlize, everyone knows just how tempting you can be.  We don’t need a set of cupcakes on your chest to tempt us further.

Diane Kruger in Chanel – This one hurts.  It pains me to put a Chanel dress on the list of worst’s but I just can’t find a place for this one in my heart.

Meryl Streep in Chris March – Meryl, we have come to expect so much more from you.  Although there is nothing really “wrong” with this piece…it’s just “meh”

Zoe Saldana in Givenchy – As we saw above, ruffles were worn much better than this!

I am absolutely loving the white gown trend that was splashed through the Spring/Summer 2010 Runways.  Here are a few of my “almost bridal” favorites…

Azzaro – I love the textural detailing around the neckline of this dress.

Azzaro (again) – very Grecian inspired design and a pairing with gold offers a dream colour pallete.

Badgley Mischka – The detailing on the neckline of this dress is beautiful.  I also love the classic silhouette.

Collette Dinnigan – This is a great version of “not quite white”.  Collette Dinnigan overlays a darker fabric with a sheer white which gives it a completely different personality.

Douglas Hannant – this is another way to add a different personality to a classic white gown.  Overlayed with lace and a unique twist to the design of the top.

Halston – This one shoulder garment almost resembles a cape, without being overly ostentacious.

J. Mendel – This has got to be my absolute favorite garment from this trend in 2010, if not from all of the collections.  It is very dreamlike and flattering.  It is definitely on my wish list!

Marchesa – This is another of my favorites.  As you can also see from my “Baby’s Got the Blue’s” post, Marchesa has been catching my attention all season.  The great thing is, I would have never really gotten to know this line if it wasn’t for this blog and my dedication to discovering as many designers as I can handle.  And trust me, there is a lot to handle.  If I haven’t mentioned it before, I have been compiling a list of designers and retailers to keep track off, by signing up for their newsletters and scouring through the runway photographs on Style.com.  I think I am well over 1,000 different designers and brand names.

BCBG Max Azria – although not one of my favorite pieces, I decided to included it because I find that the wide belt waistline adds a flattering and beautiful way of wrapping up this piece.

Yigal Azrouel – this is a dress that you could never be uncomfortable in.  I want!

And to add some accessories into the mix…

Jimmy Choo – Glass slippers don’t make sense for us “Cinderella’s” anymore.  Instead, try this Jimmy Choo metalic, sling back.

www.jimmychoo.com

Judith Leiber – Streamline

http://www.judithleiber.com/product.cfm?id=286

And of course, you will need something to keep all of your things with you when you plan on wearing any of these gowns.

So now all I need is a great party to wear a gown like this too.  Unfortunately the only black tie event that I have coming up is a wedding, and I don’t think it would be very nice of me to show up wearing white.

 ADAM – simple, yet sublime.

Alexander McQueen – This collection showed me exactly what we will miss in his work.

Andrew gn – bow were everywhere!  Plus I love monochramatic looks.  As you can see from…

Bibhu Mohapatra  – I love the quirkiness of this dress.  It almost look like paint swatches or PMS colour chips falling down her dress.

Boy by Band of Outsiders – Although the skirt screams Herve Leger I can’t help but want this outfit as my own.  It would be perfect for a casual Friday!

Ahhh, Burberry Prorsum.  I never knew how much I loved Burberry until I really started seeing their full runway collections.  When I thought of them, I immediately thought of plaids and trenches.  Although, there is nothing wrong with either of those things I am grateful that Burberry has opened my eyes to their many other talents.

Georgio Armani – the pleating and pattern in this dress makes me think of cool waters.  I can’t wait for summer!

These two styles from Marchesa make me swoon.  How much more glamour does a girl need?  The first reminds me of a mermaid, while the second feels like a waterfall.  Gorgeous!

Vivienne Tam paired her blues with black which is one of my favorite combinations of colour.  I know – black and blue, ready to fight?

Those are my favorites from the runway collections.  All of the photos were courtest of Style.com

There are lot’s of ways to bring into your colour pallete for spring.  Mix them with nudes (which I will showcase in one of my upcoming trend features), pair blue with black, where it monochromatically from pales to navys.  Have fun and sing the blues!

Lace is often perceived as being appropriate for evening wear only.  This spring, it has been re-introduced as an element that adds sophistication to even the most casual of outfits.  By day, lace can provide softness to a look when worn as a light layer.  It even provides structure to a design when added to a garment as an applique.  Both 3.1 Phillip Lim and Marchesa have mastered this visual technique.  Alexander McQueen’s full spring ready to wear line was laced (mind the pun) with a graphic print that mimics the classic mesh throughout as you can see on his leggings.

I have often shied away from lace as I find it can look cheap or remind me of bad lingerie but these styles have shown me how it can be done right.  I’m looking forward to infusing it into my spring wardrobe and using it to accent some casual pieces that simply need a touch of elegance.
